A PARTICIPATORY RADIO DRAMA
At Prospect, formerly Uganda Muslim Youth Development Forum (UMYDF) we believe community vigilance remains an undisputed tool in the fight against terrorism.
It is in communities where individuals are targeted for radicalisation and recruitment, and a community member is more likely to be caught in a terror attack than a highly protected public official.
It is therefore within communities that defences against terror must be most formidable. As part of our contribution towards strengthening community understanding of violent extremism dynamics and defences against terrorism, we partnered with Kofi Annan Foundation to produce and publish the Participatory Radio Drama titled; “Mifumbi: the undercover agent” Funded by the European Union, the drama combined the wide-reaching influence and accessibility of radio, the entertaining power of drama as an art form, and the transformative impact of participation to raise community awareness on the dynamics of violent extremism and strategies for preventing and countering it.
It unravels the stories of compelling characters set in the heart of Uganda as they face the sinister complexities of violent extremism. It sets one on a gripping journey that explores the ripple effects of radicalisation on an entire community, underscoring the urgent need for prevention and collective resilience. Over 1,564,900 people in Central and Eastern Uganda were reached by each episode of the 5-part drama during the time it aired on CBS 89.2FM and NBS radio 89.4FM.
Its message has been further disseminated through live community airing events to 301 community members, and is also currently being used as an instructional resource for P/CVET practitioners and trainers. Based on the individuals who called to engage in radio discussions hosted after each radio airing, it was confirmed that “Mifumbi: The Undercover Agent” reached a diverse audience of community members ranging from government leaders, cultural leaders, educators, business community, parents, elderly, youth, and boda boda riders 14-65 years.
We encourage local leaders, civil society organisations, and P/CVET practitioners to utilise the tool to help sensitise more people. We also welcome any feedback that can enable us improve or expand this production. Any feedback may be shared with us via info@prospectinitiative.org.
