CONCERNS
Climate resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate. In the face of escalating climate change impacts, the imperative to build climate resilience has transcended from a mere environmental concern to a critical societal, economic, and security necessity. More specifically in relation to peace & security, the relationship between climate change and conflict is complex and context-specific, but it is undeniable that climate change is a threat multiplier. It is already increasing food insecurity, water scarcity, and resource competition while disrupting livelihoods and spurring migration. In turn, deadly conflict and political instability are also contributing to climate change.
SOLUTIONS
To address these concerns, proactive measures are essential to building and enhancing individual, household, and community adaptive capacity. Tackling climate change related risk also requires collaboration and aligning policies at local, national, and international levels. As an emerging area of programming for Prospect, our solutions and contributions have so far included Research & Analysis to provide new insights in less tackled areas of climate change and its intersection with peace and security, and to enable evidence-based programming and policy making. The organization is also invested in efforts to help promote sustainable livelihoods through teaching youth and women groups about sustainable forestry, considerations when planting trees, tree planting & tree care techniques, as well as strategies to earn from trees as a source of energy and food.
OUR GOALS
Empower individuals and communities to better anticipate and mitigate climate related disasters.
Expand Knowledge production and thought leadership discussions on emerging climate related issues.
Strengthen the capacities of marginalized young people for climate adaptation and policy engagement.
Mobilize marginalized young people and women into joined actions for climate action.
Facilitate cross-country exchanges and elevate the advocacy efforts of youth and women groups through sustained engagement with policy and decision-makers at the national, regional, and international levels.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
Prospect is part of the 6 organizations that recently conducted a research study titled Resilience Rising- Youth Research Informing Global Climate and Conflict Responses and a case Study for Uganda titled Navigating Climate Challenges and Conflict- Youth Perspectives and local realities on Youth, climate change and conflict nexus in the Rwenzori sub-region. It's a fully youth-led research focusing on the voices of marginalized young people in high-risk areas. It further highlights the distinct gendered impacts of climate change and conflict, including increased risks of gender-based violence and economic insecurity faced by young women. It additionally contributes to global climate, peace, and security dialogues with evidence-based, youth-driven recommendations. The research reports can now be accessed via https://www.kofiannanfoundation.org/publication/resilience-rising-youth-research-informing-global-climate-and-conflict-responses/ and via https://www.kofiannanfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/CS-YOUTH-CLIMATE-PEACE-Uganda-1.pdf
We have mobilized and equipped at least 500 youth through our Peace Club framework in West Nile to contribute to community climate resilience through mass tree planting and sustainable farming practices.
We have worked with partners to mobilize women in Eastern Uganda vulnerable to climate and security risks to take action for climate.
